Winter Sports: Staying Active and Motivated in Cold Weather

Winter Sports: How to Stay Active and Motivated

When the temperature drops and the days get shorter, cozy blankets and hot drinks easily win out over the desire to exercise. Yet staying active in the winter is essential—for both physical health and your mood and energy levels. Here are the benefits of exercising in the winter and a few tips for staying active.

In cold weather, the body expends more energy to maintain its core temperature. Research also suggests that exposure to cold activates brown fat, which is involved in heat production. However, precautions are necessary: the risk of hypothermia and frostbite increases when the temperature approaches or drops below 0 °C. Thorough preparation is therefore essential for training outdoors in the winter.

The Benefits of Exercise in Winter

  1. Supporting the immune system: Regular, moderate physical activity is associated with fewer winter infections.
  2. Boosting your mood: Exercise releases endorphins, which help you get through the dark months and seasonal low spirits.
  3. Burn more energy: The body works harder to keep itself warm, which can increase the calorie burn during the workout.
  4. Make the most of the sunlight: spending time outdoors on sunny days helps prevent vitamin D deficiency, which is common in winter.

Our Tips for Staying Active

  1. Dress in layers: a base layer that wicks away sweat, an insulating layer, and then a windproof and waterproof jacket.
  2. Warming up indoors: A 5- to 10-minute warm-up before going outside prepares your muscles and reduces the risk of injury.
  3. Try a winter sport: skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating are fun and well-rounded activities.
  4. Keep drinking: You feel less thirsty in cold weather, but staying hydrated is just as important as it is in the summer.
  5. Set goals and find a workout partner: A specific goal and a friend to work out with significantly boost motivation.
  6. Focus on indoor workouts: when it's too cold outside, opt for the pool, the gym, or a workout routine at home.
